Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant your Sunglow Azalea 4-6 feet apart. The lower end of that range is ideal for mass plantings and hedges, while spacing can be increased for mixed plantings. This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It’s best to avoid hot, dry locations with direct afternoon sun or reflected sunlight, such as against the south side of a white wall. This plant requires rich, acidic soils for success and is subject to chlorosis in alkaline soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. Consider applying a thick layer of mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations or colder microclimates.

2. Watering: This plant requires consistently moist, well-drained soil for optimal growth but will not survive in waterlogged conditions.

3. Fertilizing: Remember to use acid-loving plant fertilizer in early spring, keep the soil moist, rich, and well-drained, add organic matter at planting time, and apply 2-3 inches of mulch to maintain soil temperature and moisture.

4. Pruning: In spring, after flowering, prune azaleas to prevent cutting off developing flower buds. Remove crossing branches, dead wood, and unwanted growth to shape the shrub and improve air circulation.
