The ‘Oklahoma Sparkler’ Eastern Redbud Tree stands out in any landscape thanks to its stunning glossy, variegated foliage. In spring, the leaves emerge in a breathtaking burgundy and crimson, gradually maturing to a lush dark green accentuated by subtle purple highlights, before finally turning golden yellow in autumn. Beyond its aesthetic charm, the Oklahoma Sparkler Redbud is a versatile addition to your landscape. Its unique coloration and attractive spring blossoms make it a focal point, while its moderate size ensures it can fit into various garden settings, from large backyards to smaller alcoves. By planting this North American native tree, you’ll enjoy a landscape feature that offers year-round interest, while also attracting pollinators and supporting songbirds with its ornamental seed pods.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a location that receives full sun to partial shade. In warmer climates, redbuds need morning sun and afternoon shade, which prevents leaf scorch and heat stress. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, then place the tree gently in the center. Fill the hole with native soil and water it thoroughly. Spread a 3” layer of mulch three feet around the tree, pulling the mulch back several inches from the trunk.

2. Watering: Ensure consistent moisture, especially during the first growing season. Place a slow dripping hose at the base of the tree, aiming to saturate the rootball. Check the soil between waterings and water when the soil dries out 2” down. Water at least twice a week during the first two growing seasons, when the tree is establishing its roots.

3. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead or diseased branches and shape the tree as necessary to encourage an open, vase-like structure, enhancing airflow and light penetration.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as the tree starts to leaf out. Follow the package instructions for dosage, and avoid over-fertilizing, which can damage the roots.
