Planting & Care

1. Planting: Hellebores flourish in evenly moist, well-drained soil and partial shade. The FrostKiss™ series can tolerate full sun in milder climates if the roots remain cool. Enrich the soil with organic matter like well-aged leaf mold and compost.

Choose a site where the plants can stay undisturbed for years. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots, apply an acid fertilizer after blooming, and protect the roots with a thick layer of mulch.

2. Watering: Water should be provided during long dry periods; once established, it can tolerate drought in cool, shaded areas.

3. Pruning: Although evergreen, foliage can look tattered in early spring. Prune dead or damaged leaves before new growth appears. Remove old flower stems by cutting back to the basal foliage, but avoid cutting the stems, as they contain next season’s flower buds. Also, discard faded foliage in spring. If you don’t want seedlings, remove old flowers before they set seed.

4. Fertilizing: Hellebores thrive in soil rich in organic matter. They prefer near-neutral to slightly alkaline soil; add lime if your soil is very acidic. This plant may take time to establish, so applying Epsom salts or dolomitic limestone around the plants can help. A light application of balanced granular fertilizer in early spring will also benefit them.
