A stunning display of rich textures and seasonal colors

Cercis canadensis ‘Black Pearl’ is a striking addition to any landscape, known for its lush, dark foliage that stands out in any garden setting. In early spring, the tree captivates with clusters of lavender-pink, pea-like blooms adorning its bare branches, creating a beautiful contrast against the dark bark. As the blossoms fade and heart-shaped leaves emerge, they unfold in deep purple and near-black hues, providing an eye-catching visual throughout summer. Come fall, this vibrant display transforms into soft chartreuse-yellow tones, ensuring that the tree maintains interest well into the cooler months.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the Black Pearl Redbud Tree is a wonderful option for those looking to attract pollinators and add biodiversity to their garden. Its unique characteristics and changing colors offer a dynamic and engaging experience throughout the seasons, making it a fantastic focal point in any yard. Whether planted as a specimen tree or incorporated into a mixed landscape, it adds depth and richness, enhancing the overall appeal of your outdoor space.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a spot with well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Deepest leaf color is in full sun, but afternoon shade is recommended in hot climates to prevent leaf scorch. Dig a hole that is twice the width and the same depth as the root ball. Gently place the tree in the hole, ensuring that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface, and backfill with soil, firmly packing it lightly around the roots. Spread a 3” layer of mulch three feet around the tree, pulling the mulch back several inches from the trunk.

2. Watering: Place a slow dripping hose at the base of the tree, aiming to saturate the rootball. Check the soil between waterings and water when the soil dries out 2” down. Water at least twice a week during the first two growing seasons, when the tree is establishing its roots. Once established, the tree is somewhat drought-tolerant, but regular watering during dry spells will promote optimum growth.

3. Pruning: Prune the Black Pearl Redbud in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to encourage healthy growth and maintain its shape. Minimal pruning is needed as this tree naturally develops an attractive form.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates.
