Planting & Care
1. Planting: To grow Nandinas, make sure to plant them in an area that receives full to partial sun (around 6-8 hours per day). They are very adaptable and can thrive in any type of soil, but it’s important to avoid wet soil to prevent disease and death. Spring and fall are the most ideal times to plant.
2. Watering: When planting, water deeply and continue to water twice weekly for the first 3 months until your new plant is established. Once established, Nandinas are drought-tolerant and will only need to be watered during extremely hot and dry conditions.
3. Fertilizing: Using three inches of mulch is an excellent way to prevent weeds, maintain soil moisture, and protect roots during extreme temperatures. Additionally, fertilize in the spring with a slow-release, general-purpose fertilizer.
4. Pruning: Nandinas don’t require heavy pruning, but can tolerate it year-round.
