Mes-Free, Disease-Resistant Poplar Tree

Planting & Care
1. Planting: Choose a location that receives full sun to partial shade and ideally has well-drained soil, though it is tolerant of many soil conditions. Be sure to account for the size of the mature tree, as it can grow to be 90 ft. high and 40 ft. wide. It also has an extensive root system, so place it away from houses, sidewalks, and other structures.
Prior to planting, mix compost into your soil. Hold the tree straight while you backfill the hole. After planting, add a layer of mulch to help conserve soil and prevent weeds.
FGT Tip: If you are experiencing extreme temperatures or a severe drought, it’s suggested that you place your tree in the shade, or plant it in a well-shaded area in your lawn.
2. Watering: Water deeply right after planting. Regularly water the plant until established. No supplemental water is required for mature trees.
3. Fertilizing: Use a balanced slow-release fertilizer while the tree is young, adding it annually in the spring. Avoid placing the fertilizer right at the tree’s roots to avoid burning it.
4. Pruning: The Siouxland Poplar Tree requires annual pruning to maintain its pyramidal shape. Prune in later winter, as pruning in warm weather leaves the tree susceptible to pests and diseases.
